Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT®) |
|
What is LSVT®? LSVT® improves both the voice and speech of individuals with Parkinson Disease and other neurological disorders by treating the underlying physical pathology associated with the disordered voice. Treatment focuses on improving loudness and immediate carryover into daily communication enabling patients to maintain and/or improve their oral communication.
Why use LSVT®? Over 400 individuals with Parkinson disease have been treated with the LSVT® in efficacy research studies. Ninety percent of the patients improved from pre to post treatment.
How does LSVT® work? LSVT® uses a combination of muscle training, muscle learning, and sensory processing to improve overall phonation through:
. speech loudness . articulation of speech sounds . respiratory support for speech . overall speech clarity
Who can benefit from LSVT®? LSVT® was initially designed to treat people with Parkinson disease. However, since its development in 1987, recent studies have shown benefits for people with neurological disorders as well. Disordered phonation has been observed in people with Cerebral Vascular Accidents, Cerebral Palsy, Closed Head Injury, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinsonism.
